If you ran a paranormal group taking "customers" round who have paid for an experience, would you cheat or fake?
I have known of a few investigation groups who do use trickery to get the desired effects. Give the customer what they want by scaring them.
One group I went with we did table tipping and trust me there wasnt any undead person moving the table. It was two or three of the so called experienced group leaders moving the table. It was so easily identifiable, but it gave the paying customers what they wanted, they believed totally that spirit was moving the table. Even had one of our team members believing the table was being moved by unearthly hands!

That would be completely immoral and dishonest and even criminal in my opinion .. so I guess that would be a "no" for me.

Yep it would be but youd be suprised how many resort to it, just so people get scared and come back!

Isn't that the same as all the dodgy mediums? They get away with it by saying it's what people want to hear, so couldn't an argument for the paranormal groups be that they're just providing entertainment?

It's not entertainment unless it's labeled as entertainment. Entertainment labeled as something real equals fraud.

Yes that's true but the law over here requires all mediums, psychics and so on to label their services as entertainment unless they want to risk being taken to court. The same applies for a lot of the paranormal groups.

...or jumper-hooters ;-) or whatever they called them in Edinburgh, LOL.
I think most people sign up for ghost tours as a bit of entertainment. As for mediums or paranormal groups who offer services in "ghost busting" or the like, I think it's fair enough to label themselves as entertainment. After all, anything paranormal is fringe science at the very least and I even hate to use the word science. Perhaps it ought to be under some sort of religious label- after all, it's more to do with belief at this point since ghosties can't be proven to exist of yet.

I think ghost hunting groups should have to declare "entertainment only" because they cant declare that ghosts exsist so what there doing is entertainment or a form of that. However serious scientifically based groups shouldnt need to because there searching for something other than the paranormal!!

There is a big difference between research into the paranormal and actually claiming to use the paranormal for whatever. I think as long as you are claiming to be looking for the paranormal then it should be ok ... but anyone claiming to actually use the paranormal ( psychics .. mediums .. etc. ) should be forced to use a disclaimer stating "for entertainment only".

fakings bad, especially if you claim to be investigating. Do it once and all the results you get from now till evermore become suspect.

guess thats the pressure of generating entertainment. In my view I'm not there to be entertained on a hunt, and get positively unhappy if whoever is doing it tries it.

Thing is though most people are there to be entertained even if they dont realise it. Ghost groups do tend to heighten effects or make out things are happening even if they arnt, just so those people go away happy in the knowledge that 1. theyve been scared and 2. theyve been entertained!
If you think how many times youve sat in a room at two in the morning and been bored stiff, well that happnes all the time on ghost hunts (as we all know) and if that kept happening then people wouldnt attend ghost hunts. So what is there left to do but to "spike" it up abit!
Trust me though, we are not like that and never will be, what you see is what you get. We tend to try and keep people occpied with paranormal related experiments and excercises, keeps tiredness away and fakery to!
