Brief History
A Tudor building built in 1636 with later Georgian additions; this ancient coaching inn was constructed from reclaimed shipping timbers, meaning that some of the structure is potentially at least 1000 years old. In a building teeming with history, several astounding discoveries have been made in recent years, including that of an old coachman's uniform, preserved for around 150 years in the chimney!
The Investigation
On entry to the Four Crosses hotel it is immediately apparent that this is a very old building much in need of some tender loving care. On inspection it appeared that most of the wood work was original and the doors and door frames certainly looked in keeping with the age of the building, being warped and ill fitting.
The Reception and public bar is the first point of call and is small with the bar area being constructed in dark wood and makes this area very gloomy but very atmospheric. A huge original fire place is situated to the left of the bar with two large comfy chairs, and one of the alleged most active areas the ladies toilet. To the right stood two tables which with the two large chairs are all this area will accommodate comfortably.
On entering this reception and bar area an immediate turn left finds you in an anti room before the main restaurant. This area was to be one of the more interesting of the night for one of the groups.
The RIP team had set up base in this area introductions and circle of protection were completed. The groups where delegated and the investigation began.
The first room was another more active room going on previous experiences by both The White Noise group and members of the public staying there. On entry the room appeared quite sparse only having room for two single beds a wardrobe and small table with a TV on it in the corner. In a small alcove was a sink and next to it a window. The room appeared to be quite in active on our group's arrival however our medium was able to pick up on a gentleman who seemed to a clergyman. Matt (our medium) also felt a dizzy feeling on standing in one particular spot and relayed it was almost as if he was drunk. He also smelt alcohol although one of the groups members had been drinking just before hand, the smell of alcohol was put down to this rather than paranormal in origin. One of group's members was also able to give some information on this man. Some calling out was tried but no reaction was seen or heard.
I picked up on a small girl who gave me the name of Catherine, approximately around the age of nine. It seemed to me that she wasn't aware of any other presence in the building and was rather excited about the groups being there. As I sat trying to glean more information about her and asking her to come forward she imposed a feeling on me of her head being "cleaved" in. Along the right side of my head was an intense "tingling" sensation and I had the impression her death was due to an impact, on that side, with a blunt tool of some description. I also got the impression that although the building was a coaching inn there were many children who where there to work and not a family unit. No further information was given although she seemed to stay with our group whilst we were on the upper level.
There was a slight fluctuation with EMF and this was attributed to electric cables. The K2 meter remained steady with no light changes noticed.
Fairly compact it had one double bed, a wardrobe, a two seat settee, a single bed and a draw set on which the web cam monitor and DVD recorder. Although our medium had picked up, on a previous visit, a farmer connected with this room, nothing of note was given on this investigation. Although at one point I found myself thinking of the rhyme "ring o ring of roses". To me the rhyme had a more sinister meaning although I did not find out why. At this point Andy our video technician had moved into the next room for a few moments as orb activity had been seen on the web cam pictures in that room. On his return I was informing Matt of the rhyme, Andy then said that one of the other ladies in the other room had also mentioned she had the same rhyme going round in her head at the same time.
One of our group then mentioned that there was a cold spot where she was lying, on the bed at the far end of the room. Both my self and Andy investigated with both the EMF and K2 meters. The EMF meter showed and large increase in this area, although the K2 showed nothing. On investigation we found that the table beside the bed was of iron construction and this would radiate a large field of EMF there was also it appeared an electric cable in the wall in that area.
Nothing else of note was recorded in this room and the group then stopped for a break.
Room Three was the largest of the bedrooms to be visited. Although the building has a third floor these rooms where occupied and the investigation teams had no access to these.
Bedroom three was again sparsely furnished with two double beds, a beau row and small table with a TV on it. In between the two beds however was a table with an Ouija board and glass. This was to be used but unfortunately very little if any movement was recorded.
On a previous visit our Matt informed us that a woman called Agatha had been picked up on and her demise had be due to an ill performed abortion possibly in this room. On this occasion Matt again picked up on Agatha and reported more information. Matt felt at one point as though Agatha was trying to come through but Matt was not able to bring her any further forward for the group. One of the other lady members of the group also seemed to be picking up information regarding Agatha, although nothing of importance was gleaned.
At one point during this sitting the door to the room which was reportedly bolted after our entrance, opened. No evidence could be found as to why this happened although the floor boards where very uneven and shifting weight and movement of the members may have been a cause. The door was closed once again and re bolted and nothing further happened.
Ouija board was conducted but again nothing of note was recorded. Only very slight movement was noted and not strong enough to show any results to questioning.
Unfortunately I picked up very little in this room. The room to me was very quiet and peaceful.
We completed out vigil and moved back downstairs.
On returning downstairs and into the reception area we were greeted by Kym and Jenny who reported there group had been conducting a vigil in the "anti room" before the restaurant and had what appeared to be a very sinister and evil presence with them. Jenny was notably upset and all the mediums present where called to "clear" the room. However most of the group seemed hesitant to enter the room. I however on hearing this information went directly in with Matt following me. Immediately both my self and Matt where greeted with an enormous amount of energy in this room. However it seemed once we had shown we were not affected by this presence it seemed to dissipate rather rapidly.
Other members then joined us and it was decided to conduct Ouija board.
8 members circled the table with firstly Matt and then Jason calling out. At first nothing appeared to happen but as Jason called out, the glass then began to move. It first moved to "Goodbye" and then to the number eight, which the members in the circle attributed to there being 8 people around the table.
Whilst this was going on Jason was called out of the room as there seemed to be a problem with one of the mediums in the reception area. With Jason having left the table the glass ceased to move again although calling out continued. Matt picked up on the presence of a blacksmith but no further information was taken.
Outside in reception Jenny appeared to have been channelled by a sinister male presence. The group were trying to call to her and this continued for several minutes, luckily everything returned to normal with in a few minutes although this event left Jenny feeling very shaky and unable to continue with the investigation. Unfortunately due to being in the Ouija board room I missed this event, not wanting to interrupt or get in the way of any help the team where giving to Jenny.
The Ouija was closed at this point and a small break was taken.
Our final vigil for the evening was conducted in an area which was said to be the cellar at one time. It now has a false floor which is several feet higher than the original making the area very cramped and a very low ceiling. Our group began our vigil by sitting on a stone plinth with the lights off. This created a very dark and dank area but seemed to lack any kind of atmosphere. Although with the lights off, what should have been a very scary area felt quite pleasant, we sat quietly in complete darkness.
Matt conducted some calling out but this area seemed very quiet and no noises or sounds were heard at this time. Matt did however pick up on what could have been a witch who seemingly had her throat cut, as Matt could "see" bloody oozing from her neck area. Nothing further was noted and our group decided to conclude our investigation.
On joining Andy and two other members of RIP we sat by the fireside in the reception area. Andy had been recording audio with an impressive audio recorder and had picked up a rather strange noise which lasted several minutes. On hearing this recording you could clearly hear the clock above the fire ticking, and as Andy had informed me moments before, the sound of a roaring fire. The fire in the hearth although earlier had been present had now damped down. As I listened, waiting to hear the noise, well all heard it again coming from the fire itself! We all looked in astonishment as we heard a non existent fire crackle in the hearth. I then realised what I was hearing sounded like soot falling down the chimney. On looking up the chimney the source of the "fire" sound was soon located. It was in actual fact an empty packet of Smokey bacon crisps which had somehow got stuck up the chimney!
Conclusion
Although on the whole this investigation was fairly quiet it was a most enjoyable experience being with RIP Team. The building is well worth the visit, if not just for the very cheap food! As said previously the Four Crosses itself is in need of some tender loving care but if you don't look too closely it's a wonderful place to be. Full of atmosphere the general ambiance is quiet and relaxing. As for ghosts, well there is definitely something there albeit quiet ones! Further investigation into the Four Crosses is highly recommended.
