I think the article is a bit misleading actually. It was a common belief that the dead could return to walk the earth but more as ghosts than zombies really. Not sure if people in medieval times had even heard of zombies, although I suppose this was their version. But trying to stop bodies from returning by removing their heads or placing them face down was usually reserved for bad nasty people anyway.
